[abstrak] ISOLASI DAN KARAKTERISASI ZERUMBON DARI AKAR LEMPUYANG GAJAH (Zingiber zerumbet) (ZERUMBON ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION FROM LEMPUYANG GAJAH (Zingiber zerumbet) RHIZOME)

In taxonomy, Lempuyang Gajah (Zingiber zerumbet) is classified in Zingiberaceae familia and considered to have benefit as an analgesic and a stimulant. Lempuyang Gajah grows in shaded and sheltered territory on 1-1200 m height above sea level. It contains volatile oil with zerumbon, campher, sineol, and caryophylen as the mayor constituent. In addition, it also contains curcuminoid group including curcumin, desmetoxycurcumin, bisdesmetoxycurcumin, flavonoid 3-glucosilcaempherol, and resin. Because it has been used practically by industry and community as a raw material in manufacturing traditional medicine, consequently quality and authenticity of the plants has to be assured and therefore the specific marker compound of the plant has to be discovered and isolated. Thus, isolation and characterization of zerumbon as the specific mayor compound of Lempuyang Gajah Rhizome has been conducted.This research was began with extract production using maceration 950 g sample in 12 L ethanol 96% (3 x 24 hr), followed with isolation process using liquid vacuum chromatography dan radial chromatography (chromatotron). Molecular structure exploration was conducted by characterization of the obtained pure isolate using spectroscopy (FT-IR, UV-VIS, GC-MS dan 13C-NMR dan 1H-NMR). This research gain new information such as extract content for 7.05% and zerumbon compound as the result of isolation and characterization process. The detection of marker compound from Lempuyang Gajah are likely able to promote NADFC in controlling quality of traditional medicine and herbal product containing qualitatively and quantitatively for related plant.
